Ypres

Walking around this pretty city, it is hard to imagine the incredible highs and lows it has endured. From a period of extreme wealth in the Middle Ages it was reduced to rubble less than one hundred years ago during World War I.

But the city of Ypres suffered many periods of wealth, wars and disasters over the centuries and each time the inhabitants found the courage to rebuild their city. The last 60 years represent the first time in its history that Flanders and Ypres have been able to enjoy a period of peace untroubled by war of any kind.

In the 12th century, as a result of the manufacture of cloth and cloth trading, Ypres became one of the most important cities in the county of Flanders.
